Lockdown works, but it’s tough for people of all ages. And ideally we’d only need them in the most extreme cases. If we can work out exactly how a virus spreads, it should be possible to slow transmission by making more precise changes to our lives. For example, if a virus travels through the air we can:

do experiments to check whether wearing a face mask can stop it

work out whether it’s enough to stay a metre away from infected people – or if we really do need to keep a wall between us and the virus

find out who the super-spreaders are (see this page) and encourage them to lie low.
